The section is led by its governing council, consisting of 16 members elected for staggered terms of four years each, as well as the section's officers: the Chair, Treasurer, Chair-elect/Secretary, and Immediate Past Chair. The position of chair is held alternately from year to year by a real estate lawyer and a probate and trust lawyer. During years in which a probate and trust lawyer is the chair, the leader of the real estate side of the section is the chair-elect.
